St. Bartholomew's Church, Eckelrade
Gothic church with three-aisled nave and 3/8 apse and a single tower with constricted spire. The gable roof covers the three naves.
Building history
The oldest part of the church dates from the 13th century. Of the single-nave church from that time, internal wall remains remain. The lower part of the tower dates from the 14th century, as well as the Gothic choir and a chapel on the north side. The tower may have been raised in the 15th century. The chapel on the north side was enlarged in 1717 to a complete north aisle. At the same time, the nave and choir were raised. The tower was given a classicist entrance gate. When the parish became independent in 1845, a sacristy and a baptistery were added on the north side. In 1923, the neo-Gothic south aisle was added on a plinth of Kunrader stone according to plans by architect Heurkens. In 1958 the tower was restored, in 1964-'65 the rest of the church.
Exterior
The church is built in marl. The lower part of the nave and annex consists of uncut blocks of kunrader stone, the upper part of sawn blocks. The window arches in the church are Gothic for the old part and Neo-Gothic for the side aisle from the 20th century. The church is covered with black tiles. The tower is built entirely of sawn blocks and is covered with slates. There is also a devotional chapel attached to the church.
Interior
The interior is covered by stucco vaults. The arches are pointed in shape and rest on round pillars. The inventory includes a late Gothic St. Anne's from around 1500, a 16th-century bluestone holy water basin, and a bluestone baptismal font from around 1860. The south wall contains a number of funerary monuments from 1644-1736.
