The presence of the Gau, a natural water source, played an important role in the creation of Vaals. After all, a wetland area is an attractive place to do business; This is indicated by the remains of habitation in this area. For example, during the redevelopment of the Koningin Julianaplein, drainage systems were discovered and also a gutter, covered with wood and natural stone, presumably an old-fashioned sewerage system.
It is known from historical sources that the Von Clermont House was surrounded by extensive gardens with fountains that also required water. Water was also used in the cloth factory. The Gau still flows through the area underground, but is no longer visible.
