You are now walking through one of the few remaining peat bogs south of the major rivers.
The name Moerputten indicates that it is a swampy area, on the spot runs a decayed prehistoric riverbed in which strong peat formation has taken place.
The peat layer was thick enough to be mined.
This created two lakes, the Lange Putten, over which the large Moerputten bridge now lies, and a smaller one, the Moerput. For centuries, the wetland area was part of the inundation zone around 's-Hertogenbosch. This meant that if it was deemed militarily necessary, the water level could still be raised. The construction of a railway in the last quarter of the 19th century was therefore only possible if the railway embankment at the Moerputten was interrupted by a long bridge on pillars.
