Although Bierbrouwerij de Witte Leeuw is somewhat hidden, it is still emphatically present at the Harbour due to its height. This used to be a bustling part of Breda with the harbor, the warehouses and the breweries. From 1613 until the First World War, the building was used by the Witte Leeuw Brewery. The entrance to the building is on a narrow alley, as was common in Breda in the Middle Ages. If you look closely, you will see these kinds of alleys in more places in the city, which are often closed off these days.
The brewing process in Bierbrouwerij de Witte Leeuw was organized vertically. It started at the top of the dry germination loft and ended in the cool cellar where the barrels were stored. This brewery was one of the last beer breweries in Breda.
