Laathof Dobbelsteyn
Until 1559 Margraten did not have its own aldermen's bench, but until 1559 it belonged entirely to the seigniorial bank of Gulpen-Margraten, which was based in Gulpen. Margraten did, however, have several late courts, eight of which can be named with certainty. One of these is the late garden Dobbelsteyn. This late court is by far the most important late court of Margraten. It is obvious that this late court had the qualification of national delight, before Margraten got its own bench of aldermen. Originally, the garden was owned by the Dobbelsteyn van Doenrade family, the first evidence of which was found in 1451. Around 1620, the court was in the possession of a certain Charles Grignet, captain of a company of hooked archers. He then took over the garden from Johan de la Bavette, seigneur de Homlen. In 1736 the court was owned by Petrus Pesters, prebendant of St. Catherine's in Utrecht.
