Hikers face one of the greatest geological treasures in South Limburg and perhaps in the whole of the Netherlands. This is the only place in the Netherlands where rock from the Carboniferous period (about 300 million years old) comes to the surface.
Hikers are looking straight into prehistoric times! In the past, stone was extracted in the quarry for the construction of roads and houses, until naturalist Eli Heimans (1861-1914) discovered fossils in the coal.
Because he was so passionate about all the treasures of this region, this quarry is named after him. In 1911 he wrote 'Uit ons Krijtland', which put the Geul valley on the map with the general public.
In the dark stone in the quarry, there is a good chance that a real fossil from the Carboniferous period can be discovered. There are many prints of plants here, but also of prehistoric animals here and there. This is a unique geological monument!
