The inhabitants of Terheijden used to go to church in Breda. In 1400 permission was granted by the chapter of Breda to build a rectorate chapel in Terheijden, which was a daughter church of Breda. This chapel was consecrated in 1401 and was dedicated to Saint Mary. This church was expanded and enlarged in the course of the 15th and 16th centuries, and so the current church building was created. In 1633 the church was elevated to the status of a parish church. It was consecrated to Anthony Abbot.
In 1648 the church was annexed by the Reformed, who used the church until 1801. Then the church had to be returned to the Catholics.
