The Van Esschenven was created by wind erosion, which follows from its location in a west-southwest-east-northeast direction.
The van Esscheven is very picturesque and attractive because of the heavily wooded, jagged or straight banks, the appearance of islands and the vegetation with the very fragrant myrtle and water lilies. Characteristic and often rare plants such as marsh St. John's wort, rush fern and shoreweed grow there, as well as fragile carpets of sphagnum moss. The fens owe great fame among biologists to the presence of numerous species of ornamental algae (desmidiaceae). This was due to the fact that the fens were fed by calcareous surface water from the Moergestelse Broek by the Rosep. In the 30s of the 20th century, however, this was largely reclaimed and the surface water became very nutrient-rich due to fertilization. At one time there were 350 species of ornamental algae, and now there are only ten. In 1950 the Rosep was disconnected because it had become too nutrient-rich, but the fens are also further threatened by acid disposition and manured surface water. In the winter of 1995-1996, the silt was removed from a number of fens. Source:Oisterwijkinbeeld
The Oisterwijk Fens (designated as a geological monument) is a fine example of the gently sloping Brabant blanket sand landscape with parabolic dunes, forests, heaths, fens and transitions to sparse grasslands in stream valleys.
The origin of the Oisterwijk fens (shallow lakes on sandy soil) is not entirely certain in all cases, but since there are drifting sand areas and stream valleys in the immediate vicinity, it is assumed that there are both extinct depressions and stream valley fens (created from former stream beds).
