The origin of the name Cartierheide lies with Baron De Cartier De Marchiennes, who bought the adjacent Duizels Hof in 1863. In 1932, his son Emile donated the site to the Forestry Commission and Natuurmonumenten. The Forestry Commission tries to preserve the heath by sowing, mowing and grazing. This leads to a beautiful, varied heathland. The Bazadaise cows graze there from spring to autumn and give the heather an extra natural appearance.
Visitors can traverse the area on foot, by bike, or by wheelchair.
