Although not actually a real fort (it is officially called: Werk aan de Bakkerskil), it is now known as a fort. It was built between 1877 and 1879. The work was intended to close off the Schenkeldijk and to protect the Papsluis. It was also important for the protection of Woudrichem and the closure of the southern Maasdijk. The fort, with a bomb-proof barracks and surrounded by a moat, housed almost a hundred soldiers. After WWII, collaborators were imprisoned in the fort. Fort Bakkerskil is now owned by Brabants Landschap.
