In the occupied Netherlands it was practically impossible to escape the terror and deportations. As early as February 1941, strikes broke out throughout the country after the first deportations of Dutch Jews. After that, however, the demonstrations were quickly over and the behavior of the Dutch towards the fate of their Jewish neighbors varied from collaboration to resistance.
In 1941 there were 528 Jews living in Nijmegen. These were often helped by non-Jewish Dutch people, who provided them with a hiding place and food. For those involved, this was life-threatening, because not only the persecuted Jews, but also those who helped them, awaited the concentration camp. Many in the occupied Netherlands have suffered the same fate as Anne Frank, only their stories have become less known. Like the story of Rose Jakobs.
Rose Jakobs had fled with her family from Germany to the Netherlands in 1938. They lived in Den Bosch for some time. During the war, the family went into hiding near Nijmegen. Rose kept a diary there for two years. On 2 October, when the fighting around Nijmegen has subsided and Nijmegen is completely in the hands of the Allies, Rose Jakobs dares to leave her hiding place for a while. She is then hit by a bomb fragment from an overflying plane and dies from her injuries.
