Description

Geerestein was most likely built between 1394 and 1402 by Jacob van Zuylen van Nijevelt. After his death, his son Steven van Zuylen van Nijevelt, Marshal of Eemland and councillor of Bishop David of Burgundy, inherited Geerestein. In 1430 he appears to actually live there. In 1478 he handed over Geerestein to his brother Gerrit van Zuylen van Nijevelt. During the Hook and Cod disputes, Steven, Gerrit and Jan were leaders of the Hook faction. They were also opponents of Bishop David of Burgundy. In 1482 the bishop besieged the castle and in June of that year he took the castle by treason. The brothers were imprisoned at Duurstede Castle. After the death of bishop David of Burgundy in 1496, Gerrit was appointed marshal of Amersfoort and Eemland. Gerrit's grandson, Arend van Zuylen van Nijevelt, became lord of Geerestein and Hoevelaken in 1546. He can be regarded as the builder of the current Geerestein.
