Cronenburg castle place
The remains of the Huis te Castricum (1100) and later Kronenburg Castle (until 1450) lie in front of the farm. The entire site is a provincial archaeological monument, due to its history. The province wants to keep the archaeological values in the area intact as much as possible, which means that the site may not be leveled or plowed and that lowering the water level in the ditches is also not permitted. Keeping in tact also means that no excavations will take place.
Kronenburg farm marks the center of the former mouth of the Oer-IJ. Through intensive research in the immediate vicinity, but also on the site itself, it is known that there are various indigenous settlements here from the Late Iron Age, Roman period and Early Middle Ages (ca. 200 BC - ca. 900 AD. ).
In 1997, electrical and magnetic resistance measurements determined that the foundations of two structures were hidden in the soil. The Cronenburg area, including the farm, was designated as a provincial archaeological monument in 2003 because of its geological and archaeological values. The area is a high sand ridge, in the middle of the former inner delta area of the Oer-IJ. With the landing of this from around 400 BC, the land was taken into use for habitation. In addition to a castle site, there are also remains of settlements from the late Iron Age (250 - 12 BC), Roman times (12 BC - 450 AD) and the Middle Ages (450 - 1500 AD) hidden. .
