Haeren Castle is one of the five castles in the municipality of Voerendaal. The current castle is built on the foundations of a castle from the thirteenth century. The first inhabitants had
family ties with the family that owned Borgharen Castle near Maastricht.
To distinguish themselves, they used the designation 'Haeren'. A daughter of the family married someone from the hoe tse broek family, later the Hoensbroek family, so it came into the possession of that family.
In 1720, the Aachen textile baron Von Clermont, who was fond of castles and country houses, bought the castle. Unfortunately, the castle burned down in 1742. For the wealthy owner, however, this is
no problem, he immediately had the castle rebuilt in the Rocco style, which was modern at the time. The plastered ceilings and beautiful mantelpieces date from that time.
The list of later lords of the castle also includes the name of the influential Panhuysen family from Maastricht. Nowadays the castle has a number of owners, each of whom is allowed to inhabit a part of this paradisiacal place.
