The artists of De Stijl believed in a new, better world. Art played an important role in this utopian thinking. Mankind could make great progress through technical, scientific, social and artistic innovations. The university was going to win over the individual.
Tellegen hid the word utopia in this sculpture of Corten steel, a material known for its typical brown rust colour. Will this ideal ever become a reality? Or is this idea of progress subject to wear and tear? Today, new issues arise, such as our relationship with the environment.
Artist Boris Tellegen (1968) was commissioned to visualise an encounter between Mondrian and Rietveld on the cycle route between Utrecht and Amersfoort. Tellegen made his breakthrough in the 1990s as a graffiti artist under the name Delta. His graffiti became world-famous for their unique compositions with a 3D effect. Tellegen cuts, cuts and stacks his collages into reliefs and sculptures. In the meantime, his art has become truly 3D.
