Beverweert

The best view of the castle and the Kromme Rijn can be obtained by driving 200 meters into the (narrow) Beverweertseweg.

National monument Beverweert is an originally 13th-century castle, and former knight's court town, which is located on an island in the Kromme Rijn near the village of Werkhoven, municipality of Bunnik. Beverweert Castle is surrounded by landscaped gardens with sightlines, in which the Kromme Rijn itself plays an important landscape role. The oldest part of the castle (the rectangular residential tower) dates from the 13th century. Soon after, the south and west corner towers were added. In the first half of the 14th century, a square building was erected against the west tower, which was extended beyond the residential tower in the 16th century. The building was raised several times in the course of time, after which the old courtyard was closed in the 17th century with an elongated wing between the two corner towers. In the nineteenth century, the castle was modernized in neo-Gothic style. It became a regularly shaped country house and battlements were added. In 1934, the castle was largely stripped of its plaster. Around 2010 a new layer of plaster was applied.

At the beginning of both the Beverweertselaan and the Molenhoeflaan there are two yellow-painted cast-iron fence posts with BEVER and WEERT on them. They date from the middle of the 19th century.
