Line of Juffrouwwijk

Description

Within the Grebbelinie, the Line of the Juffrouwwijk had the task of sealing off the Slaperdijk and for the defense of the Juffersluis. After the construction of the Utrecht-Arnhem railway in 1844, the work also served to seal off the railway.

Definition:

In 1799 constructed earthen DEFENSES with parapet and wet moat in front. On the south side the line is closed with a hornwork, The line is located on both sides of the Slaperdijk. The total length is approx. 600 meters. The hornwork has an area of 250 by 60 meters for the northern part and 250 by 120 meters for the southern part. In the Slaperdijk immediately north of the hornwork is a culvert lock, the Juffersluis. In the hornwork lies a German cannon casemate. On the liniedijk are three Dutch machine gun casemates.

The construction is of general interest because of:

Cultural-historical values as part of the Grebbelinie, as it was laid out in six phases over a period of 200 years.

Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic engineering, which is based on:

a. the system of inundation and access defense (18th, 19th and 20th centuries), b. the system of 'living' field reinforcement in depth (20th century)

This is a complex that is initially an example of defenses from the period:

phase 4: 1799, reinforcement French Time

Ensemble value because of its location within the system of the Grebbelinie in general, in particular as a still intact preserved barrier at the liniedijk between the Werk aan de Roode Haan and the core of the municipality of Leusden. Also because of the functional and physical coherence of the parts of the complex. Finally, there is a cool/reasonably cool relationship with the shooting field and inundation field

The complex is rare because it is an almost complete example of an 18th century defensive structure in the Grebbelinie and as such it is representative (characteristic) of this type of defense.

The complex is well preserved because almost all the associated parts are still present in more or less recognizable form and function.
