A typical feature of the moraine area is drifting sand. Large plains with fine loose sand. Sand drifts have arisen in four ways in the past. First of all, moors were overgrazed. Secondly, heath patches of too large areas were used elsewhere as fertilizer for arable land. If there was too much teasing, the moor could not recover. Another harmful activity was the creation of sometimes hundreds of meters wide cart tracks. And finally, large-scale trees were cut down. The sand is then no longer retained and the wind caused the drifting sand to spread further and further. As a result, the sand drifts became larger and larger and dunes were also created. Along the edge of a sand drift is usually a high sand wall, on which the sand collects.
