In the park behind the bus shelter on the Tuindorpweg in Maarn is a bronze statue of the railway worker, unveiled in 1987, who holds a shovel with both hands and wears a cap. The statue is a tribute to the many workers who dug the passage through the Utrecht ridge for the Amsterdam – Arnhem railway line in the 19th century. It is also a reminder of the origin of the village of Maarn, now almost a century ago. For the hard-working diggers, houses with large (vegetable) gardens have been built in the Tuindorp district. Marc Pieters concludes his website about the tracks in Maarn with the observation: "Fortunately, these houses are now protected because they are part of the industrial heritage of the province of Utrecht".
