The church had a Romanesque predecessor and originally belonged to St. Paul's Abbey in Utrecht. The church was dedicated to Mary. The oldest part of the current church is the choir with the sacristy, which were built around 1400. In the first half of the 15th century, the pseudo-basilical nave and the tower were built successively. The nave and choir are plastered white, while the lower of the three tower sections is clad in tuff. The tower is crowned by a constricted needle spire.
