On this side along the Oude Rijn, the towpath has been preserved in a few places. You have a towpath here which is the first long-distance towpath in Holland. It was created in 1664 in the three-city consultation Leiden-Woerden-Utrecht and about a hundred bridges and bridges were built for it.

The construction of more than 100 bridges was a costly affair at the time. The costs were offset by levying tolls. As can be seen from the text on a laying medal issued at the time, there was quite a bit of opposition to the towpath: 'Het jaegpadt lang verwaght, Regret wangunst, nu accomplished, Regret boeren domme kraght, Siert aan den Rijn drie steeden'. Following this example, there were more towpaths and barge connections.
