The 'Schraallanden langs De Meije' is an important nature reserve with so-called 'blue grassland'. Plant species grow here that were fairly common until 1950, but are now limited to a few reserves. The reason for this is that they live in moist grasslands with nutrient-poor water. The barren lands have a size of almost 60 hectares, of which about 2 hectares are open water. Because the area has been drained, the barren lands are higher, causing water to flow out of the area and the barren lands to dry out. The soil consists of a metre-thick layer of peat, with clayey material in the top layer. Since 1980, the barren lands have been using their own water management, whereby water from the Meije can be let in during dry periods.
