For many years there was a railway line at this point that covered the cities of Hulst (NL) and Sint-Niklaas (B) with
connected each other. The first train on this route ran on 10 April 1871 as far as De Klinge (Belgium) and on 26 April 1871
August 1871 to Terneuzen. The route was part of the railway line 54 Mechelen-
Terneuzen. The railway played an important role in the economic and social development of
this region. The last passenger train between Sint-Niklaas and Hulst ran in May 1952. It

The Belgian section from St-Niklaas to De Klinge was closed in 1975. In the Clingepolder directly
east of Hulst is a nature reserve called the Zoetevaart, so here the
railway track. Now this former railway line is part of a beautiful green cycling and walking route
route that is part of the cycling route network of the Waasland and Zeeland.
