Along the former railway line (54) Mechelen-Terneuzen were about 2 km (eye distance) from
from 1907 from Clinge to Terneuzen 18 so-called railway houses, trackkeepers' houses.
The houses were occupied by railway workers, guards, who were employed by the
train company.
A watchman is responsible for part of the surveillance and security of a railway. And
operating railway trees, signals, switches, bars and bridges. Often 3x a day the route was
box inspected. White and green flags, horns blaring and later with the telegraph became security
of the steaming train announced. Also, the wife took partial duties from the husband
about, eg as a bareelwachter.
A strip of land along the railway as a vegetable garden and for keeping a limited number of pieces
cattle supplemented their meagre wages.
