The first wadis in the Netherlands are located in the Ruwenbos district. This smart water supply was developed here and used for the first time. There are now 200 wadis in the city and thousands in the rest of the world. The gutters and residential streets in the neighbourhood drain their water into the wadi. This is where the water is collected. This way, rainwater does not have to end up in the sewer. This reduces the risk of nuisance. The swale can also drain groundwater when the groundwater level is very high. When the level of the groundwater is very low, the swale replenishes it by allowing rainwater to sink into the soil.
