The Kerkepolder is located south of the West Frisian village of Wognum. The peat cover that has been on the surface in Westfriesland has disappeared almost everywhere due to clumping and oxidation. In the Kerkepolder there is still a remnant of the original peat cover (residual peat) and this ensures that it looks strikingly different from the surrounding landscape. With about 14 hectares, it is a nature reserve of modest size, but the wet meadows exert a great attraction for hundreds of birds. The Kerkepolder is a true bird paradise.
