The hamlet of Vechten near Bunnik has a long history. In Roman times, the castellum Fectio was located here, close to the place where the river Vecht split off from the Rhine. The Rhine was the northern border and defensive zone (the Limes) of the Roman Empire and also an important trade route. In early medieval sources, Vechten was also known as Wiltenburg. Near Vechten is also the Fort near Vechten, built around 1869 as part of the New Dutch Water Line.
