The GWL site is a district built between 1996 and 1998 on the territory of the former Municipal Water Pipes. Of that service are still the machine building, now Restaurant De Amsterdam, the Warehouse, now homes, the Entrance House to the underground basins, now the office of the neighborhood manager, the Windketelgebouwtje, now hotel and the water tower, now icon. A district has been built around these buildings with 600 homes on 6 hectares. That's pretty densely built up. But because cars are locked out, there is room left for utility gardens and play areas. You want everyone to have a neighborhood like that.
On the site there is also a monument to folk writer Gerard van 't Reve, who was born in 1923 across the street at Van Hallstraat 24 2-hoog.
