With the Archeo Route Limburg you will discover the stories behind Limburg's history and archaeology.
How unrelenting the high water of the Meuse can be became apparent as early as the seventeenth century, when the raging river swallowed up the drowned castle of Elsloo.
A relentless flood put an end to the medieval castle, which had previously benefited from its favourable location on the Meuse.
Here, in their square residential tower, the noble lords of Elsloo were safe from enemies and could levy tolls for passing ships.
The fishing and hunting rights also provided money, until the Meuse claimed its own Atlantis here and only stories remained about the drowned castle at the bottom of the river.
