Iron Age Farm

This Iron Age farm is a reconstruction of a three-nave stable house. Built in 1978 by the Biological Archaeological Institute. As an example, a prehistoric farm from an excavation of settlement remains near Hijken from the Pre-Roman Iron Age served as an example. This house was dated to 200 BC. The aim of the experiment was to gain insight into the choice of building materials, constructions, tools needed and the way of life at that time. They were also interested in the sustainability of such a prehistoric farm. All materials come from the immediate vicinity, except for the thatch of the roof. Actually, the thatched roof is too neat for that time. Grass was used as pipe grass and heather sods to cover the roof. The loam, a kind of clay from the soil, comes from the loam pit 100 meters away. In 2003 the farm was restored by volunteers and the Forestry Commission. Because the Iron Age farm is so beautifully situated in the Drenthe landscape and the local residents cherish the farm, the Forestry Commission tries to preserve it.

On the sand ridge there are traces of ancient habitation and use from the Bronze Age (2000–800 BC) above and below ground. Examples are burial mounds, comb fields and house sites. In the Reijntjesveld, for example, there is such a burial mound.
