Jan Wijsmuller sat on the Nassaukade and recorded life on the quay and the Haarlemmerplein on the other side. The Haarlemmerpoort was left out of the picture (left). In the middle, Singelgracht and Brouwersgracht meet. This part was called the Korte Brouwersgracht and was later called Korte Marnixstraat. The houses on that street were later replaced. Around 1900 a block of houses was added: Korte Marnixkade. These houses are in the middle of the statue and therefore now block the view as Jan Wijsmuller had at the time from the Nassaukade.
