De Blikken is a bird-rich area with a unique structure of waters: meandering creeks and old drainage ditches cut through the area. It owes these forms to a historical event. During the Eighty Years' War, the area was deliberately flooded to keep the enemy at bay. The ebb and flow movement created a relief-rich landscape, intersected with creeks. After the peace of Munster in 1648, the area was gradually brought back into cultivation. In the mid-nineties, de Blikken became a nature reserve
