The Baarzandse Kreek is a historic area near Groede. The area is originally an estuary. The creek is formed by low-lying, marshy shorelands bordering open water. From the viewing platform you look over a piece of history that is bustling with life. Ducks, geese and meadow birds find their way to the area in large numbers as a breeding ground and as a wintering area. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen was the scene of the Eighty Years' War. To keep the enemy at bay, the inhabitants of Groede breached the dikes in 1583. The 'Groedsche Watergang' has been carved into a wide creek: the Baarzandse Kreek. In 1613 the polder was diked again. But the creek has remained. At the end of the last century, the creek banks were drained and used as agricultural land. Part of the creek is now a nature reserve. In some higher grasslands, hawthorn hedges are present on old plot boundaries.
