In the centre of the Sterrenbos, northeast of Amerongen on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, stands the lonely oak. This oak, probably planted in 1792, is located near the highest point of the Amerongse berg. The Sterrenbos, which was created around 1790, originally has the shape of a wagon wheel with eight spokes. Its circumference is 900 meters and the spokes are each 135 meters long. The construction took place on behalf of the lord of Amerongen Castle, Frederik van Reede, who owned a large area here. Over the years, the character of the site had been greatly affected, among other things by the disappearance of a number of spokes. The recovery began in 1990. In 2004, the Douglas fir forest within the circle was cut down and the eight spokes were replanted with beech trees. A bench has been placed around the trunk of the Lonely Eijk.
