The tower was built in 1508 as part of the city wall, on the grounds of the Marian Monastery. The monastery not only provided the land, but also contributed to the costs of construction. That is why the tower was named after the monastery. This defense tower has a particularly rich history and has had various functions over time, including, in addition to a defense tower, also a powder magazine, ice cellar and workshop. Today, the Mariatoren has a very special purpose: the Hendrick de Keyser Association has transformed it into a 'Monument and Bed'.
