Jacob van Foreest ordered the construction of this building in 1671. He amassed a large fortune during his lifetime. He was secretary of the council of the Committed Councils of Westfriesland and the Noorderkwartier. The board of this organization was based in Hoorn and that is why Jacob spent a large part of his time here.
The wealth of the Van Foreest family did not stop with Jacob. In 1724, the Foreestenhuis was occupied by one of his descendants: Nanning van Foreest. At that time, Nanning was director of the West India Company, mayor of Hoorn and by far the richest resident of the city. He displayed his power and splendor by having a new natural stone facade installed on the Foreestenhuis.
The Foreestenhuis no longer offers shelter to rich people, but to churchgoers: since 1802, the Foreestenhuis has housed a church community, among other things.
