The Grote of Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk is a Gothic transept basilica with ambulatory and west tower, built as a collegiate church from about 1400 to 1548.
After 1566, the Grote Kerk changed hands several times. From 1566 to 1576 the church remained in Catholic hands. From 1577 to 1581 the church first came into Protestant hands and then was again dedicated to Catholic worship until 1590. After the stratagem with the peat ship of Breda (in 1590), Breda would come into the hands of Prince Maurits and remain until 1625. Between 1625 and 1637 the church would again belong to the Catholics, but in 1637 the church finally came to the Protestants. Everything that reminded us of Catholic worship disappeared from the church for good. What remained were the beautiful funerary monuments, vault paintings and other interior pieces worth seeing.
