Once upon a time, the Romans wandered through the Maasheggen landscape. A well-known Roman of that time was Phaedrus, a renowned poet. He wrote fables; stories in which animals are presented as people and where there is often a wise lesson. He also adapted the fables of the Greek poet Aesop. During their journey through the Maasheggen, Roman legionnaires passed on the fables to each other. Perhaps, when they saw the fleeing animals between the hawthorn hedges, they thought they were seeing the main characters from the fables of their famous compatriot. Do you see them too? Get to know these adventurous animals and their experiences in the Maasheggen area. This cycling route over the 15-kilometre junctions leads you along the exciting story.
On the fifteen-kilometre-long cycle route through the UNESCO area De Maasheggen and the De Vilt nature reserve, fifteen contemporary fables are told. Animals and plants, which also occur in the natural surroundings of Oeffelt and Beugen, play the leading role in all fables. Do you want to listen to them?
Scattered along the route you will find panels with a QR code. Scan the QR code with your mobile phone's camera and listen to the exciting, educational and entertaining fables. The fables have been adapted and recorded by writer Geurt Franzen from Boxmeer.
De Vilt nature reserve
The 140-hectare nature reserve De Vilt is owned by Brabants Landschap and is located between the villages of Beugen and Oeffelt. There are two large water areas in this natural pearl: De Beugense Vilt and De Oeffeltse Vilt. It is surrounded by flowery grasslands, marshlands, hedges and forests. De Vilt is one of the forty places designated by the province that tell the story of the origins of North Brabant. The Vilt is a former bend in the Meuse that has silted up over time. The area was created about fifteen thousand years ago.
