The first Brabant fries were baked in 1905 at the fair in Bergen op Zoom, followed by the rest of the Netherlands. The delicious Brabant fries can still be tasted at the Bergen fair. In recent years, fries have gained a new status: top chefs such as Niven Kunz and Sergio Herman have opened 'frites ateliers' and specialty shops in the big cities. 'Haute friture' is accessible to everyone! North Brabant is one of the most important potato-growing areas in the Netherlands. Although the potato seems to be inextricably linked to Dutch cuisine, it only came to our country from South America in 1588. Although mainly known among the elite at the time, the peasant population eventually embraced the potato as well. In the 19th century, this tuber was even the only food in a North Brabant farming family: "èrpels in the morning, èrpels in the afternoon, èrpels with soup in the evening, always those èrpels". It is therefore no coincidence that Vincent van Gogh's first masterpiece depicts the potato eaters.
