Leg 14: Lienden - Grebbesluis Rhenen

Just outside the village of Lienden, the route passes the Marspolder, a nature reserve with particularly clear water, from which rare birds also benefit. The path follows the shore of the lake and a little later the Cuneratoren van Rhenen comes into view. The best way to reach Rhenen as a hiker is via the bicycle / foot ferry. It is in service from May to September. A little later you are already on the Markt at the foot of the tower. The Cunera hill is a nice place to stop and reflect on the legend of Cunera and the story of King Radboud and his evil wife Aldegonde. From here you can see the place where this all took place. After the city of Rhenen, the Grebbeberg must be climbed. Upstairs, several viewpoints over the Betuwe and the Blue Room nature reserve await. To visit the Military Field of Honour you have to deviate from the route for a while, but it is really worth the effort. Once the mountain descends again, the Grebbesluis is reached at the beginning of the Grebbedijk. Behind the dike begins the Gelderse Vallei, the area where Gilbert van Schoonbeke had his eye in the 16th century to cut peat for the expansion of Antwerp.

Fastest connection by public transport between start and end point: From the Grebbesluis on foot to bus stop Grebbesluis (100m) and by bus 44 dir. Tiel to Lienden, get off stop Vogelenzangseweg. On foot to the church of Lienden (600m).
