If you're at Tavira and you might like some exercise in the form of a combination hike/boat trip, then this is a nice option for a morning or afternoon hike. You can either start in Tavira or leave your car at the signpost for Barril Beach in the proximity of Santa Luzia. The pedestrian bridge at the signpost for Barril Beach takes you over the inlet, past the train stop of the little tourist train that runs to the beach, right to Barril Beach. You may want to do the trail through the dunes alongside the rails by foot. The trail is 1,5 km long and takes only 20 minutes. Contrary to other stretches of beach/dunes along the coast, we did notice some birds here. At the end of the trail lies Barril beach, a small confined collection of barrels, neatly stacked in the dunes next to a restaurant. Not exactly the image which I had pictured myself for one reason or another, but when seen from a good angle, it is possible to make beautiful pictures without the fence surrounding them. The stroll along the beach towards your left is a nice one. The sand is relatively hard and suited for easy walking and you may find a beautiful shell or two. You really can't miss the end of Ilha de Tavira. The myriad of parasols and beach chairs indicates this place expects a lot of sunbathers from Tavira in summer. If you want to have a drink or meal before you leave this place, then enter the premises via the first boardwalks. If not, continue to the last parasols and then turn to the left to go to the ferry services. The ferry to Tavira is incredibly cheap (1,30 €) and provides you with a view of the more or less industrialized wetlands of Faro. As you step off the ferry, go to your left and then immediately turn to your right. Don't mind the shabby surroundings. You'ill have to manoeuvre a bit through the winding roads before you arrive at a road which from then on goes practically all the way to Santa Luzia. The frontline of Santa Luzia is marked by fish restaurants. The latter part of the walk from Santa Luzia to the parking lot at Barril Beach has recently been refurbished and makes a good finale before arriving at the parking lot where you started from. All in all a nice hike, in combination with the ferry trip. Kind regards. Ipomoea.
