The Irtysh River meanders through the flat area here. This area was once part of the West Siberian Glacial Lake that was created during an ice age by the blocking of the Irtysh and Ob into the Arctic Ocean. That blocking was done by a gigantic ice sheet. Silt was deposited in the fairly shallow lake, making the area even flatter. Due to the lack of relief, the Irtysh has difficulty making its way through and draws beautiful meanders and river deposits in its own valley.
