Jenny Lind, known as the Swedish nightingale, taught here at the Royal College of Music. Hans Christian Andersen met and fell in love with her, but while the two became good friends, she had no romantic feelings for him. Three of Hans Christian Anderson fairy tales were inspired by her: "The Ugly Duckling," "The Angel," and "The Nightingale". It is said that Andersen also visited prostitues, but he paid them just to sit and chat with him. He died unmarried and a virgin.
