Jarlabanke’s era has persisted in the landscape. We can see it in thickly foligaged pastures and open fields, along the shores of Vallentuna. The runes send us off on a journey to the 11th century, them time when the Kingdom of Sweden began to take shape, when Christianity and God had become the one way, and the elite were raising rune stones to ensure their place in Heaven. Around Lake Vallentuna, they still tell their stories. Jarlablanke raised rune stones to his own greatness, and his whife Kättilö and his son Ingefast did so to mark his passing. We can look at the same scenery as they once did, travel their roads past farmsteads and graves, and let our fingertips touch their thousand-year-old missives.
