King Mongkut (Rama IV) had a golden image cast at a time Siam was experiencing great difficulties, namely the increasing pressure from the West and the threat of colonisation. The image, a guardian spirit meant to protect Thailand and its inhabitants was named Phra Sayam Thewathirat. The standing image is dressed in royal attire and carries a short sword.
