Wat Jong Kham was built in 1827 by Tai Yai artisans during the rule of Phraya Singhanat Raja, the first ruler of Mae Hong Son and his wife Chao Mae Nang Mia. It was the first temple built in the province and promoted to a royal temple in 1984. The temple is called Jong Kham because of the temple's pillars are decorated with gold leaf (originally silver). Unfortunately, the original wooden temple buildings were damaged by a fire in 1970 and much of what can be seen today is a reconstruction.
