A long and pleasant descent to Barranco Camp leaving more time to chat with our guide Johny .
Our guide is now 28 years old. Johny appears to be doing this to fund his sister's education, who has 1 year left to become a doctor. He himself would like to study electronics. He now does a lot of sports and also trades in sports equipment. In his free time he plays football.
Apparently he climbed Kili a long time ago and has completed training as a mountain guide. To become a leader you have to pass a difficult test , and not many. As a practical test , the ascent from the Barafu hut must be made 3 times in a row.
Apparently he was a good student because he is a qualified mountain guide who has already made 132 ascents on all routes.
His condition must be very good, because every year he goes up and down the mountain for training in 2 days. In addition, he has already climbed and descended from Barafu Camp in 4 hours and wants to break this record later this year.
To register (2022):
In 2010, Spanish mountain runner Killian Jornet, aged just 22, reached Uhuru Peak in 5 hours 23 minutes and 50 seconds.
The current fastest combined time record for ascent and descent is held by Ecuadorian Swiss Karl Egloff, who completed the Umbwe Route and Mweka Descent in just 6 hours 56 minutes and 24 seconds in 2014.
Tanzanian Simon Mtuy holds the record for the fastest unassisted attempt. He carried all his gear, including food and water, along the Umbwe route for 9 hours and 19 minutes .
The main guide sets the pace (short uphill) and decides who may or may not continue or even have to dismount. The group of guides goes first with the fastest and finishes with the slowest last . If someone gets stuck, grab the backpack , help and speak of courage. You are very close, especially on the last climb.
