Grand Canyon Tonto Platform

Geomorphological POI

Source: Pascal Brackman

The shape of the valley is created by the alternation of relatively softer and harder rocks (mostly sandstone, shale limestone and at the bottom metamorphic rocks). The typical flattening, creating the Tonto Platform, is due to the recession of the soft Bright Angel Shales. Below, you have a steep part, and a more narow canyon. In this part, the Colorado cuts through the oldest metamorphic rocks and forms the Inner Canyon.
