Description

A visual telegraph line between Boston and an observatory on the island Martha's Vinyeard before the shore of Boston was already in existance in 1801. The obeservations travelled over a distance of 116 km or 72 miles in a few minutes by signals from sighnpost to signpost. Obviously, putting these signposts on hills makes sense, so that's where the name Telegraph Hill is coming from. The line was used commercially by merchants of Boston and Salem to know about arrivng cargoes as early as possible. There is no survuving system how the looked like, but it must have been close to the system inented by the French Chappe. This line was designed and patented by Jonathan Grout.
