Martha's Vineyard

In the 18th century, Martha's Vineyard had a proportional large number of deaf people. Common in isolated communities with large number of deaf people, a "village" sign", a type of local sign language, emerged. The language was widely shared by both deaf and hearing people, but rose and fell without being formally documented.
